School Closure

Harvest Festival and the Giant Pumpkin

If you needed an excuse to come along to our Harvest Festival on Thursday at 1.45 in the school hall, then we have just the thing.
You will get a chance to see the Giant Pumpkin, grown by the father of James Fitzgerald in Reception, which will be on display in the school hall until after the Harvest Celebration.
You can even get a photograph of yourself with it for a small donation to our partner school in Gambia.

Art Activity Day

Thanks to all of those parents who came in to school today to help with our Art Activity day.
we made art based on storybooks to decorate the shared areas of the school. In Year Two we made pictures from 'The Chimpanzees of Happy Town'

In Year One they made pictures based on 'Jolly Olly Octopus'.

Well done everyone. The school now looks wonderful.

Next Thursday, 15th September, is our first Art Activity day of the new school year.
Each year group will be making art based on a storybook.
If you would like to come in to help your child, you are welcome between 9 and 12.
Please remember that it could get messy - so don't wear your best clothes.
If you would like to help - just come in to school on Thursday morning and tell the classteacher that you are here to help.

Toby's Ark Programmes

Thanks to all who made contributions when they picked up a programme for Toby's Ark.
Thanks to your generosity we collected the splendid amount of £85 which will go to our partner school -
Banyaka Lower Basic School in Banjul, Gambia.
This amount of money goes a very long way in such a poor country as Gambia, so once again, thank you all very much.

As you may know Priestlands School will be closed on Thursday due to industrial action by one of the teaching unions.
The teachers at Pennington Infants are not members of that union and therefore our school will not be affected and will be open all week.

Jump Rope

Family to School May 2011

We hope you enjoyed our first two family to school on Monday and Wednesday of this week. The children really enjoy having you in to school to work with them.

On Monday we had a visit from Bournemouth Water who told us how we get clean water through our taps and also showed us ways we can conserve water.

We also worked in the sensory garden and had stories under the trees in the quiet area.

Tree Sparrows Nesting

We have a pair of tree sparrows making a nest in the birdbox outside school. The pictures from the nestbox are being streamed to the Birdbox Project website, which we set up with SEGfL 7 years ago.

Larry Achike

Today at school we had a visit from Larry Achike.

Larry is a triple jumper who has won gold medals at the World Junior Games and the Commonwealth Games. He was helped by Todd Bennett, the former world record holder and olympic silver medalist.

We were given 4 different exercises to do, we also had our phiotos taken with Larry.

Children who have been sponsored for our exercise session this morning will raise money not only for our school, but for promising young athletes who Team Superschools help to fund.

Following this Larry talked to the school, he measured out how long his longest jump of 17.30 meters is.

To our amazement it was longer than our school hall - even from corner to corner. He then answered some of our questions.

Larry then demonstrated just how far he can hop and step and jump.

Building Works

If you are bringing your child to, or picking up from, the Reception class would you please use the school main entrance.

Art Activity Day

Many thanks to all of those parents who came in to school today to help the children on Art Activity Day. The children from the 3 year groups were mixed up and worked together to produce artwork to decorate our shared areas in the school. Years R and 1 based their work on Beauty and the Beast. Yr 2's illustrations were of Wind in the Willows.

Every year Mrs O'Grady asks every child in the school to enter the annual Christmas Card Competition.
The winning illustrations are made into the cards which are given to all of the children in school and are used to send to friends of the school.
After a very difficult judging process seven winning designs were chosen.

Parent Information Afternoon

On Wednesday afternoon we had our Parent Information event.
It was lovely to see so many parents who had come in to find out information not only about our school, but also from the many outside agencies who came along.

It was a very relaxed and friendly afternoon.
Stalls from St Barbe Museum, School Health Service, Lymington Leisure Centre, School Dentist, Children's Library, School Meals Service, St John's Ambulance, Children's Centre and Extended Schools gave parents a wide variety of useful information.

FUN RUN hit by rain!

For the first time in 15 years persistant rain meant that we had to do our Fun Run in the school hall without the parents present.

Despite the rotten weather we all went in to the hall and did our sponsored laps of an obstacle course.

Your children will come home with a certificate to proove that they have completed the required number of laps.

We are very sorry that you were not able to come along this year, we hope for better weather for future events.

Thank you all for your generous sponsorship of our Jump Rope for Heart event this year.
We raised the magnificent sum of £607.35 - in no small measure due to one child raising a brilliant £300. Thank you so much.

Our Grand Raffle raised £339.00 which will help with the development of our outdoor learning environment.

Contributions for teas on the afternoon of our school sports raised £30, which will be donated to Oakhaven Hospice.

The programmes for our end of term celebration; 'Mr Cookie's Food Factory' raised over £80 which will be sent to our partner school in The Gambia in Africa. We do know that these donations make a positive difference in an area of the world where schools are very poorly resourced. Thank you very much.

Last Week of Term

The last week of term and the last week of being infants for the Rowans and Junipers.
Weather permitting it should be a fun week.

All parents and friends of Year Two are welcome to their Music and Dance Extravaganza.
This will be held on the school field at 1.45 on Tuesday.

Thursday is our last day (Friday is a staff training day).
You are all welcome to come along and join your children for
a picnic, fun and games - and sad farewells - on the school field
starting at 12.00.

Jump Rope

We held our annual Jump Rope sponsored skip in aid of the British Heart Foundation on our playground.

We were pleased to see so many adults supporting this event - and we would like to say a big thank you to all of those who picked up a rope and joined in.

Heritage Day - 8th June

Despite the showers we all spent a day looking at, and working in, our splendid outdoor environment. We had Richard from the Forestry Commission and Sue from the New Forest National Park Authority who came in to school and worked with the children.

Our Year 2 children worked alongside the Year 3 children from the Junior School making 'tree people', making pine cone mice, investigating how birds can pick up food with their beaks and following clues in a 'treasure hunt'.

High Viz jackets from Rotary

We would like to send a big thank you to Lymington Rotary who came in to school this week and presented us with a set of High Viz jackets with our school name on the back. These will be available for our children to wear when on visits outside school where we have to walk off site.

Jungle Mural

Local artist Joel Papps, with the support of ArtSway, has been helping us to design and create the artwork.

TESCO VOUCHERS

Now that the Tesco vouchers scheme has finished, it is time to collect and count.
So, if you have any vouchers left at home could you please send them in as soon as you can.
They all have to be counted and sent off within the next two weeks.

The Birdbox Project

The Birdbox Project now has 120 schools involved.
We have come a long way since the project was started by Pennington Infants and the South East Grid for Learning. In the first year we were the only school broadcasting live pictures to the internet.

Science Week 15th -19th March

On Monday of Science Week our parents were invited to join the children in three activities.

In the Main Hall the staff from StBarbe Museum in Lymington set up an exciting range of Science experiments.

In Reception there was a bridge building challenge.

In Year Two staff from New Forest District Council showed us what happens to the waste that we recycle.

We are looking forweard to the rest of our Science Week, particularly the visit of the Science Boffins on Wednesday.

Tesco Vouchers time again.

Its that time again. Tesco are giving away vouchers, when you shop, for school equipment.
The scheme runs from today until Sunday9th May.
Please save your Tesco vouchers (and collect them from friends and family who don't want them) and send them in to school with your child. There will be a collection box outside the school office for them to put them in.
This scheme has provided us with many useful items over the years that it has been running, we are sure this year will be the same. So get collecting - and thank you for your help.

Sickness bug strikes

This was the almost deserted lunch hall at school today.
After a very virulent sickness bug hit the school we were left with 49 children instead of our usual 126.
We also had 6 members of staff who succumbed.
If your child has had, or gets, the sickness bug please remember we ask you to keep your child home for 48 hours after they have been sick. This is to try to stop the spread of the bug.

Drum Crazy

Today we went Drum Crazy.

Each class had the opportunity to play lots of exciting percussion instruments in some nice rhythms.

At the end of the day the parents came in and heard what we had been playing.

The children were also asked to pay 50p to listen to the stories and I am pleased to report that we have raised over £120, which will be sent to the Haiti Earthquake Appeal.

Playing in the snow

We had great fun playing in the snow on our field.

Everyone wrapped up warm and built snowmen and had snowball fights - a rare and unexpected treat!

It is still very icy on the roads and pavements in Pennington, so please take care when coming in to school.

Following a site visit this afternoon we have taken the decision to keep the school closed on Friday 8th January 2010.
Although the main roads around school are clear, the side roads, pavements and the school grounds are very icy and constitute a risk to safety.
Priestlands, Pennington Juniors and Pennington Village Pre-School are also closed.
We hope to see you all on Monday.

Christmas celebration

It will be performed on Thursday 10th December at 1.45
and on Friday 11th December at 9.30 when we will also hold the Christmas Raffle.

We all came to school today dressed as pirates and following a fun morning of pirate activities we had our Fun Run in the afternoon.

A really good turn out of parents came to watch us run around our obstacle course to raise funds for school.

Don't forget that this week you have the opportunity to come in to school on Monday or Wednesday afternoon for a variety of exciting activities. You may also come in to school on Thursday morning to work with your child. Jump Rope for Heart

On Friday morning we all went out into the playground for our sponsored skip for the British Heart Foundation. We started off with Miss Snaddon taking the whole school for a 'warm up' to Mamma Mia. Then each year group did a 3 minute skip before inviting the parents to get up and join us. Thanks to all of those parents brave enough to join in and thank you very much to all of the people who have sponsored the children in this event. The monies you have raised are going to a very worthy cause.

The Birdbox Project

Pennington Infants were founders of the Birdbox Project 6 years ago. It now has over 40 participants, including schools in Germany.

Fairy Tale Art Day

A great big thank you to all of the staff, parent helpers and especially the children who helped to make such a successful Art Activity Day.
The children worked in mixed age groups to produce displays for the shared areas of the school which were based on fairy tales.
In Year Two the children based their work on Alice in Wonderland and this splendid display in the main corridor was the result.
Year Two also produced this painting which is now on display in the main entrance.
Year One based their artwork on the Gingerbread Man.
In Reception they based their work on Beauty and the Beast.

Victorian Christmas Celebration

Our Victorian Christmas Celebration will be held in the school hall on Wednesday 10th December at 1.45. There will be coffee and mince pies following the celebration.
On Thursday 11th December the performance will be at 9.30 and will be followed by coffee, mince pies and the drawing of prizes in the Christmas Raffle.
Please remember we finish for the Christmas holiday on Thursday 18th December and school re-opens at 8.50 on 5th January 2009.

New wireless netbooks

6 children making graphs on our new Netbook Computers

We have invested in some Dell Mini9 netbook computers to give our children even more ICT provision. These machines are a great size for a group to be able to work together around a classroom table. They are also able to access our protected internet service through the new acccess points which give us wireless internet throughout the school.
As we are about to start using the Studywiz Learning Platform to be able to direct focussed ICT activities at individual children, these new netbooks will allow even more children to take advantage of it.

FUN RUN 2008

We held our annual fun run on the 1st of October. Despite being gloomy all day, the sun came out as our run started.

The children ran 5, 6 or 7 times, depending upon their age, around an obstacle course on the school playground.

This sponsored event was raising money to help to develop our outdoor learning environment. We also held a collection for our partner school in Gambia.

Active Eat Roadshow

Wednesday 24th September

The Year Two children enjoyed an Active Eat roadshow at the school today. They all tried 4 activities designed to make them think about a more healthy diet and they were given the opportunity to try some exotic fruits which they may not have tried before,
There was also a smoothie making competition. Mr Chapman judged it - having to try 40 smoothies (lucky him!).
They were all very tasty, but the winner was Robbie from the Rowans.
All of the children recieved a pedometer and we are going to have an ongoing competition to see who does the most steps per day. We will let you know the results.

Old Boy shows off his Olympic Medal

Pennington Infant School old boy Nick Rogers showed our children his Olympic Medal today.

When Nick was at our school he was taught by Miss Groves, our present Deputy Head-Teacher.

Nick (on the right) won his silver medal with his partner Joe Glanfield in the 470 class sailing event at Beijing. It was his second olympic silver medal, having also been on the podium in Athens.

It was a great thrill to be able to ask Nick questions and to be able to touch his Olympic Medal. We hope that Nick's example will encourage our children to work hard at their sport.

With another Pennington old boy, Sam Vokes, playing football in the Championship for Wolverhampton Wanderers and being in the Wales National Squad, we have some great role models for Pennington children who would like to take their sport seriously.

TEAM READ

Kids get active and get reading this summer

All Hampshire Libraries are on their marks and getting set to keep young people active and keep them reading throughout the summer holidays….with the Summer Reading Challenge™.

The Summer Reading Challenge™ is simple – read six books during the summer, through your local library. Children are given a special pack and a set of incentives to collect as they read, with a certificate and medal for those that successfully complete the Challenge.

Every year there’s a different theme. This year’s Summer Reading Challenge™ is called Team Read, with a whole range of sporty activities and incentives to spur children on to the finishing line.

Librarians at your local library will be on had to act as team coaches, and an interactive Team Read website will be launched in June, linking children with top authors and illustrators whilst giving them space to talk about their favourite books and share reading ideas. With Team GB gearing up for the Beijing Olympics, successful Team Readers will be able to boast that they’ve beaten our top sportspeople when it comes to winning medals! So there’s more than a sporting chance that boys as well as girls will get on the fast track to becoming keen readers.

The Summer Reading Challenge™ is ten years old this year, and is now reaching over 650,000 children in the UK. It’s created and run by The Reading Agency, the independent charity working to bring more reading to more people, in partnership with the UK library network.

Research shows how central reading for pleasure is for children’s life chances, and yet recent international comparisons show that children in England enjoy reading less than their international peers and less than they did five years ago. They’re also spending less time reading for fun outside of school.

The good news is that the Summer Reading Challenge™ is keeping children in the race over the summer when it comes to reading, improving their reading range, confidence and enjoyment. Schools say that this contributes to their confidence and reading achievement, with potentially life-changing results. This year, thanks to a new initiative called Enjoying Reading, there are also new resources available to help libraries and schools work more closely together in capitalising on the progress children make through the Summer Reading Challenge™ and turning them into reading winners. That’s an excellent result as part of the 2008 National Year of Reading.

Half Term - and next term

Have a great half-term holiday. We return to school on Monday 25th February for the second half of Spring term.
Please remember that we will only have Good Friday and Easter Monday as holidays. There will then be a two week Spring Holiday starting on Friday 4th April and returning on 21st April.

Early Bird Club

From 8.05 every morning we have our early bird club in the school hall. You can drop children off for a supervised session before the start of school. The charge is £1, Early Bird Club is also open to children attending Pennington Junior School.
